Nutrition and Diet to Treat Infertility

It's pretty much common knowledge that a well-balanced, nutritional diet plays an important part when you are preparing for pregnancy. There's no doubting the fact that good nutrition assists your overall health & wellbeing, and knowing this it is not hard to understand how incorporating good nutrition and diet can also help to optimise fertility & therefore also increase your chances of conceiving. Thinking in terms of what food elements make-up a good, balanced, & nutritional diet. We will take a look at the following food guide pyramid, provided by the US Department of Agriculture, and Dept. of Health & Human Services, and designed to assist non pregnant women & men make good nutritional food choices.

The Food Guide Pyramid: Fats, oils, and sweets - use sparingly.

HOSPITAL DIET

Milk, yogurt, and cheese group 2-3 servings daily (1 serving is 1 cup) = 236 ml of milk or yogurt; 43 gm of natural cheese; or 57 gm of processed cheese.
Meat, poultry, fish, dried beans, eggs, and nuts group 2-3 servings daily (1 serving is 57-85 gm) of cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish; for other foods in this group 28 gm of meat = ½ cup of cooked dried beans = 1 egg =2 tablespoons of peanut butter.
Vegetable group 3-5 servings daily (1 serving is 1 cup) 236 ml raw, leafy vegetables; ½ cup 118 ml of other cooked or raw vegetables; or ¾ cup 177 ml of vegetable juice.
Fruit group 3-5 servings daily (1 serving is 1 medium apple, banana, or orange; ½ cup 118 ml of cooked or canned fruit; or ¾ cup 177 ml of fruit juice.
Bread, cereal, rice, and pasta group 6-11 servings daily (1 serving is 1 slice of bread; 28 gm of cereal; or ½ cup 118 ml of cooked cereal, rice, or pasta.

Many Naturopathic Health practitioners also offer additional dietary tips to optimize your reproductive health and increase fertility. Such as; alkaline foods like peas, beansprouts, and milk. And also recommend avoiding to many acidic foods such as; red meats and tea, because they may increase the acidity level found in your cervical mucus, which could inhibit sperm.

Another factor identified as important is good hydration. With the recommendation to drink at least 48 ounces of water each day - throughout your day (rather than all at once).
Many Nutritional practitioners also recommend increasing your intake of foods containing essential fatty acids. Examples are beans, nuts, seeds, and oily fish. This is backed up by medical research which shows that essential fatty acids stimulate the production of reproductive hormones in both men and women alike.
