"As the condition worsens, the lack of coordination may become more exaggerated, and the diabetic may seem to be intoxicated. Unconsciousness may occur in extreme cases. Convulsions also may result, particularly in children," Larson said.

As a society, most of us are taught little about grief -what it is and how to identify it, articulate it and cope with and recover from it. We are taught not to openly discuss our feelings about the loss of humans let alone an animal. We are advised to "Keep a stiff upper lip", "Be strong", "Get over it", "Move on," Don't burden others with your troubles", "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps". Our friends may be well-intentioned but are awkward and unschooled in the effort to comfort and console us. We, in turn, are ashamed, uncomfortable and embarrassed to acknowledge, let alone openly discuss our grief over the loss of a pet, and so we internalize our feelings even though our hearts may have been broken and the way to begin to recover from grief is to express our feelings openly and forthrightly.

And while it is acceptable and beneficial to mourn the death of a human being, to hold public as well as private funeral or memorial services, wakes and other ceremonies and burials and to eulogize our loved one and to receive sympathy and condolences from our friends, traditionally there have been few, if any of these public ceremonies or rituals available and acceptable which help comfort us and help us recover from our grief over the loss of a pet. However, it should be noted that this situation is changing dramatically as our pets' status and importance in our lives have increased and the public's consciousness regarding the importance of pets in our lives becomes increasingly elevated. Pet funerals, wakes, memorials, tributes and eulogies - even candle light vigils - have become much more common. With increasing frequency, we hold ceremonial burials and services for our pets. We may bury them in our gardens, family burial plots, at pet cemeteries. We may purchase a casket and headstone. We may choose to have them cremated and have their remains placed in an urn. We may choose to have their cremated remains buried in a special place or spread with our own remains at a sacred spot of special emotional or spiritual significance. We choose or design beautiful burial markers and graves; as beloved and cherished family members, their burial is sacred. We may mourn the passing of our beloved pet alone or with family members and friends who knew and loved our animal companion.

We honor, celebrate and memorialize the lives of our loved ones. We make financial endowments in their memory and honor; we donate to our favorite animal welfare organizations on their behalf; we pay for the rescue and care of abandoned, neglected and abused animals. We donate trees, shrubs, park benches ,memorial bricks, etc to honor and memorialize our our departed pets. We may adopt other pets in their honor, for there are so many abandoned, neglected and abused animals in need of loving homes.

When we grieve, we experience a confluence of painful feelings and emotions, but it is important to understand that no two people grieve in the same way. We may experience one or more of these phases, but we may feel a vast spectrum of emotions including loneliness,, emptiness, abandonment ,helplessness, hopelessness, anger, guilt, depression and despair, rage and bitterness, etc. There is no prescribed or designated way to grieve; there is no allotted or "normal" time frame in which to grieve. Each of us is unique; the relationship that we had with the loved one was special. The most important aspects of recovering from grief are to know that it is the normal, natural and healthy response to loss and that it is cumulative. In other words, the intensity of the grief we experience over the loss of a loved pet may depend on how many previous losses we have sustained and the emotional and spiritual significance of these losses.

It is important to recognize that we are grieving and to give expression to our true feelings whether through conversations with loving, supportive and empathetic friends and colleagues. It may be helpful to consult with members of the clergy and various staff members of local animal welfare organizations or rescue groups who understand and have themselves experienced the loss of an animal companion. We may wish to contact a psychologist or grief counselor and participate in pet grief support groups. Highway 190 leaves Kona north to Waimea then on to Honoka'a and Waipi'o Valley in about 1 1/2 hours driving. The photos from the valley overlook are postcard gorgeous and Honoka'a has cute shops and restaurants. After a 1 hour drive, seeing several sites along the Hamakua Coast, Highway 220 branches to Akaka Falls. Follow the paved loop through the tropical jungle and smell exotic flowers along this not-to-be-missed, easy 1 hour waterfall hike. Be sure to stop in Honomu for the unique shops. Proceeding south on Highway 19, ten minutes, is the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive (4 Mile). Along this road is Onomea Bay Trail, a 1 hour round trip hike, down to the ruggedly picturesque coastline. From there it's 20 minutes to Rainbow Falls, Hilo's signature waterfall. Hilo is the largest city on the island and has numerous shops, malls, museums, restaurants and beaches, such as Richardson Beach, near downtown. From Hilo, it is a 2 1/2 hour drive back to Kona.

Leg 1) In Kailua Kona, start at Ahu'ena Heiau, take Palani Road east to Hwy 190; take Hwy 190 through Waimea to Honoka'a.

Ahu'ena Heiau and Kamakahonu Beach

Centuries ago the inhabitants of this region built a series of sacred temples, or heiaus, which were originally used for the purpose of sacrificing human beings to their war god, Kuka'ilimoku. This particular archeological site is called Ahu'ena Heiau, which in Hawaiian means "Hill of Fire".

Built originally in the 15th century and rededicated by Kamehameha the Great in the early 1800s as the main temple of his capital, the current structures seen at Ahu'ena Heiau were re-built in 1975 under the auspices of the Bishop Museum with financial help from the Hotel King Kamehameha and are constructed to 1/3 the original scale. There are restrooms and showers located on the pier near the beach. Adjacent Old Kailua Town is a treasure of shops, restaurants and aloha.

Snuggled between Mauna Kea and Kohala Volcano in Hawaii's scenic mountain heart, seemingly always shrouded in mist and chilly, Waimea is definitely Hawai'ian cowboy country. Although jeans and flannel shirts appear to be the town uniform, Waimea is very sophisticated, boasting some of the finest shopping and restaurants and the most modern hospital on the island.

From Waimea, Highway 250, the Kohala Mountain Road, spills beautifully through mountain, upland meadow and forest to the "Old Hawaii" town and artist community at Hawi. Additionally, the cattle industry centers in Waimea. In 1793 British Navigator George Vancouver presented cows to King Kamehameha which were allowed to roam free and soon became a problem. Shortly after horses were brought to Hawaii in 1804, Kamehameha recruited California vaqueros, whom Hawai'ians called "paniolo"--a corruption of the word "Espanol"--to control the wild herds, and the generations-old ranching lifestyle here was born. The vaqueros also brought their guitars and their love of music. A deeply musical people, the Hawaiians were intensely interested in these, the first stringed instruments they had seen. They quickly learned to work-out their own tunings, called "slack key guitar", which more suited the style of their indigenous music.

Honoka'a Town

Built in the era of sugar great plantations and left culturally and economically isolated after the industry collapse, until recently Honoka'a was content to drowse along through the decades. A boom in real estate and return of vital human energy to the area has made a literal renaissance of the town. It boasts numerous wonderful restaurants, gift and boutique shops and the highest density of antique shops on the island. Be sure to stop to explore a little on your way to or from Waipi'o Valley...it's a fun, happening kind of place and always steeped with aloha.

Driving north or south out of Honoka'a, remnants of old sugar mills, fields and wild cane can still be seen. When Captain Cook arrived in 1778, only wild sugar cane was growing; at its height in the mid-1960's one in 12 people were employed in the sugar industry which produced in excess of a million tons of sugar annually. Though the business is gone, what is left are the people who once worked the fields and mills. The melding of the rich cultures of Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, Portuguese, and others is what gives today's unique Hawaii lifestyle its sweet flavor.

Leg 2) At Honoka'a, turn north on Hwy 240 to Waipi'o Valley.

Waipi'o Valley

Waipi'o Valley is arguably the most magical place on the Big Island. The steep canyon walls and verdant fields of the valley floor, the mile long black sand beach and numerous immense waterfalls that line the valley walls all call out to the visitor for exploration.

Always listed among the most beautiful spots in the State of Hawai'i, this valley is as hauntingly lovely as it is difficult to see in its entirety.

Tours down into the valley in vans, on horse drawn wagons and ATVs can be booked in Honoka'a. Over-flights in fixed wing aircraft and helicopters also offer fine venues from which to see this amazing piece of Hawai'i. Hiking down and wandering the immense black sand beach, exploring the ironwood copses and sand dunes and discovering the hidden waterfalls is also a popular way to see the canyon. Although the hike down is only a little over 1 mile and a thousand feet elevation loss, the climb back up is sweltering in the ferocious sun and heat. Think twice before hiking down. Facilities at the Scenic Overlook include a pavilion and restrooms; there are none within the valley itself.

Leg 3) From Waipi'o Valley, return to Honoka'a on Hwy 240, get on Hwy 19 and head south.

Leg 4) Take Hwy 19 south to Laupahoehoe then Kolekole, continue south to Hwy 220; west on Hwy 220 to Honomu, then to Akaka Falls.

Laupahoehoe Park

A place of great beauty, of awesome displays of oceanic power and of tragic memories, Laupahoehoe Park stands where 20 children and teachers at the Laupahoehoe School were killed in the tsunami of 1946. Inside the park on a small hill overlooking the jetty is a memorial stone inscribed with the names of those who died in the tsunami. There are restrooms, campgrounds, picnic facilities, pit barbecues and ball fields. The pounding of the raw ocean on the jetty reminds one that not every beach in Hawaii is made for swimming, however the fishing here is excellent.

Kolekole Beach County Park

The river you saw magnificently jumping with such abandon off the cliff at Akaka Falls ends its journey to the sea by sluicing through this Koa-tree filled canyon and smashing into the surf at Kolekole Beach Park. A wild beach, a jungle canyon and a waterfall swimming hole are fun things to do at Kolekole Park.

The visitor is advised to admire the ocean, but not go in. The currents and tides are lethally treacherous here.

Facilities at Kolekole Beach Park include picnic pavilions and tables, pit barbecues, showers, restrooms and drinking water.

Akaka Falls

There is a reason that Akaka Falls rates as the most visited tourist site on the Island of Hawai'i. Simply put, the 420 foot, free falling plunge of clear water down a fern festooned cliff is an amazing and beautiful site. Leaving the parking lot, the paved loop trail of about one mile, winds through a wonderful jungle of exotic flowers, ferns, orchids, ginger and bamboo. Two smaller falls are also seen along the way to the stellar Akaka Falls. Akaka Falls has restrooms but no other facilities.

When visiting Akaka Falls, be sure to save some time to explore the shops, galleries and cafes of Honomu on the way back to the highway; it's unlike anywhere you've ever been before...guaranteed.

Leg 5) Return Hwy 220 through Honomu to Hwy 19, then south on Hwy 19 to Old Mamalahoa Highway (or Kulaimano Road to Old Mamalahoa Hwy); this is the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive. South and east on Old Mamalahoa Hwy to Onomea Bay; continue on Old Mamalahoa Hwy south to southern jct with Hwy 19.

Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive

Located just a few minutes north of Hilo on Highway 19, this "Old Road through Old Hawai'i", a four-mile-half hour scenic wander, parallels Highway 19 but is removed worlds away from the traffic and hustle along the main road. Rolling along old cane fields, jungle-canopied in places, passing waterfalls and crossing creeks, the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive is a special treat for the visitor who may be thinking they waited a century too long to visit Hawai'i. On a sunny day, on a rainy day, it doesn't matter; this scenic drive is a joy. There are no services available along the scenic drive.

Onomea Beach Trail

Only a few miles north of tame and sedate Hilo Bay, Onomea Bay is subject to the full fury and magic of the open Pacific Ocean. Rugged, jagged, majestic, the wickedly sculpted cliffs along the bay belie the easy 15 minute walk down to the beach. Accessible to most walkers of even marginal condition, the trail leads alongside a botanical garden (be sure not to wander through any of their gates unless you are a paying customer) and meanders down to the canyon mouth, past a tiny waterfall at the end of the stream and to the beach. Leg 6) South on HWY 19 to Hilo; get on Hwy 200 (Waianuenue Avenue), head south-southeast to Rainbow Drive and Rainbow Falls.

Hilo Town

Beautiful but wet, metropolitan but decrepit, bustling but laid back, Hilo is a lovely, maddening, heartbreaking, addictive study in contrasts. In can rain all day long for 50 days in a row, yet when the sun does shine, the views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea from the Lilioukalani Gardens, or of Hilo Bay as you drive down from the mountains, or the rain-forest and waterfall choked gulches with lovely beaches along the highway north of town, make Hilo one of the most truly, achingly-lovely spots on earth.

More laid back and sleepier than bustling Kailua Kona, Hilo is the largest town on the island, and the county seat. The Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, Tsunami Museum, Lyman House Missionary Museum and the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo are all wonderful places to learn about various aspects of Hawaii. There are numerous shopping districts, two large malls and the Historic Old Hilo downtown shops to browse through, a variety of sprawling green parks, a fabulous tropical arboretum right downtown and a mile-long black-sand beach fronting the bay to explore. Hilo's Farmer's Market is a "must see" for any visitor who is spending time on this side of the island.

Rainbow Falls and Wailuku River Park

The subject of recent and ancient legend, Rainbow Falls is the lovely emblem of Hilo town. The characteristic wishbone shape of Rainbow Falls is best seen at moderate river flows...too little water and only a single drizzle remains, too much runoff and the falls merge into a single, roaring flume. At any time, however, it's a beautiful place and worthwhile to visit. The rainbows within the falls are best seen in the mid to late morning. Follow the trail to the left along the river bank to delightful swimming and wandering; please note, however, that swimming in rivers and near falling water is dangerous. Don't go in if the current is swift or if recent rains have swollen the river.

Restrooms are by the parking lot and a souvenir shop is located across the street.

Leg 7) Return Hwy 200 (Waianuenue Road) to HWY 19, then east on 19 to Jct with Kamehameha Ave; Kamehameha Ave east to jct with Kalanianaole Ave to Richardson Beach Park.

Richardson Beach Park

Richardson Beach Park, with its towering palms, fresh water pools, delightful surf, secluded and calm tidepools, lawns and general ambiance of tropical paradise, is almost certainly very close to what most visitors expect from Hawai'i-hence it popularity.

Views of Mauna Kea at sunrise and sunset from this beach are unparalleled. The snorkeling here along the small black sand beach is the best of the Hilo area and the surf is a busy mix of beginner to intermediate level waves. Restrooms, showers, water, picnic tables and a lifeguard round-out the amenities of this wonderful place. There is also a Hawai'i County Police Department substation here.

In fact, the majority of hypertensive persons have no obvious symptoms. One may have high blood pressure for years without noticing anything or feeling different. Because of this, the problem is usually ignored.

"The fact that high blood pressure is a 'silent killer' and a major cause of death and disability was not always appreciated. Medical books published in the early 1900s didn't even list hypertension in the index. And as recently as 1950, there were doctors who believed that as long as you were feeling fine, high blood pressure didn't mean a thing. The magnitude of the problem and its impact on health is now more realistically understood," added Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld of the New York Hospital - Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center in "The Best Treatment."

What can you do about hypertension? For mild cases (in which blood pressure measures 140/90 or 140/104), lifestyle changes may be all that's necessary. This is preferable than taking drugs and is the approach used by most doctors.

"In most instances, mild hypertension can be controlled once you remove the factors that, contribute to it. Since many of these factors are controllable, modifying these through lifestyle changes will often result in an improve¬ment of a person's condition," said Dr. Desiree M. Narvaez, a medical specialist formerly with the Department of Health Non-Communicable Disease Control Service in Manila.

"Two factors account for the shift away from drugs in treating mild hypertension: uncertainty over whether their benefits outweigh their unpleasant and possibly harmful side effects, which can range from fatigue and headaches to elevated cholesterol levels; and recent evidence that nondrug approaches can often lower blood pressure to normal levels," Katzenstein added. 1990's Diet Drug Dangers

In the United States, the pressure to be thin gained ground in the early 1990's. The Gastric Bypass Diet - Eating After Weight Loss Surgery

You have finally made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery and now you have to learn about the gastric bypass diet. Most people realize their life will be drastically different in the future, but their thoughts are about how much weight they are going to lose and not what changes they will have to make to get there.
 
What you will be eating will be a big part of the changes you will be making. You will not be having surgery and be eating a hamburger the next day. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Most bariatric surgery programs include the diet specification as part of your pre-op information. I was actually required to take classes that taught the particulars of the bariatric diet. The other thing that is important is that these foods are purchased and in your home prior to your return from the hospital.

Step 1 of the diet for gastric bypass was not something that I had to be concerned about too much. It was administered while I was in the hospital by the dietitian. I had to be able to eat a step 2 meal before I could leave the hospital. Step 2 foods are bariatric protein shakes, pureed and strained foods and baby foods. You can have any combination of these foods. The most important thing here is to try to consume 60 grams of protein per day.
 
You should be drinking 32 ounces of water or sugar free beverages. You should also eliminate any carbonated beverages at this stage of your diet. Step 2 of the bariatric diet will last 2-4 weeks following your surgery. Step 3 will be the step where you begin reintroducing soft foods back into your diet. I started with cottage cheese and scrambled eggs. No matter what you begin with, you have to make sure it is chewed until it is liquid. During the next month, you will be trying out different foods and learning what foods your body likes and what things your body will not tolerate.
 
Step 4 will come at about 2 months following your surgery. At this point, you can eat almost anything. Meats are going to be the most difficult. You will want to cut it into small pieces and/or add it to broth. You should always limit your fat and sugar intake. Sugar presents a large problem for most gastric bypass patients. If you have the lap band, you probably will not have as much of a problem as a roux-en-y patient.

That's why, in some circles, July is viewed as being amongst the most hazardous times to fall ill. That's the time at which residency programs begin the start of their new year.

Hypothetically, each and every junior physician gets close supervision from more senior and experienced physicians in training and of course from attending. Unfortunately, when institutions become busy, less experienced physicians end up working excessive hours with very little in terms of supervision. Starting in the year 2003, residency programs that received accreditation by the ACGME, had to cut resident work weeks from 120 to 80 hours. The ACGME is now practicing that recommendation. However, only in part. As of July 2011, residents who are in their first year, will be restricted to shifts lasting 16 hours. Several experts have opined that these longer shifts increase risks for patient harm due to sleep deprivation.

The 16-hour restriction placed on the first-years is one of many recommendations being suggested to the ACGME board for final approval.

The head of Public Citizen Health Research Group, has taken issue with the ACGME's failure to suggest a 16-hour limit for all: "The improvements in the new ACGME guidelines are largely swamped by the failure to cover the majority of medical residents with the protection of not having to work more than 16 hours continuously."

In the newest recommendation, first-year residents would be prohibited from moonlighting at other places of employment and from being "on call" in hospitals.

A History of Nutrition

Conventional wisdom has led us to believe that milk gives us strong bones, eggs are a perfect protein, meat give us strong muscles and that plants contain low quality protein. Conventional wisdom differs from scientific wisdom in that scientific wisdom has been conducted without a bias for a particular result and is peer-reviewed by other scientists who have a strong knowledge of methodology and statistical analysis. In other words, the aim with science is to find out what is likely to be true, not what is popular. Unfortunately, the prejudices of big business food industries reach more people than that of the scientific community. "Prejudices are hard to uproot when they are not recognized as such, and even more so when they are still being repeatedly reinforced within the culture at large" (Diet for a New America, John Robbins). Lets take a trip back into history and follow a few studies that have helped shape the scientific viewpoint on nutrition and its relation to disease.

Over 2,500 years ago Plato and Socrates condemned the eating of animal flesh. 2,000 years ago, so did Seneca, tutor and advisor to the Roman Emperor Nero. Later Hippocrates, the father of medicine, understood that diet prevented disease and said "food should be our medicine and medicine our food" during his time, 460-357 B.C.

In the 1800's a few scientists continued to shape our view on nutrition. One of those scientists was Dutch Chemist Gerhard Mulder, who discovered protein in 1839. Carl Voit was a German scientist in the late 1800's who discovered that humans needed only 48.5 grams of protein per day, but recommended 118 grams. Voit mentored a few young scientists, including W.O. Atwater who later developed the Unites States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Atwater continued to over-exaggerate the need for protein, which became synonymous with meat in the 19th century even though protein can be found in plant foods as well. This has led to classically misguided question posed to vegetarians and vegans still today of "Where do you get your protein?" (The Chins Study, T.C. Campbell and T.M. Campbell). This is also about the same time that Dr. Weston Price published his findings on the excellent dental health in primitive peoples vs. the horrible dental health in civilized peoples. He determined that processed foods were the culprit for the deterioration of dental health, even with hereditary traits such as dental arches and facial structure (Nutrition & Physical Degeneration, Dr. Weston Price).

At the same time, the medical field was being shaped by a few pioneers. Louis Pasteur, a famous French chemist in the late 1800's, supported the germ theory of disease. The Germ theory remains the corner stone upon which vaccines, parasites, viruses and antibiotics were created upon in the medical field. It states that the immune system is a victim to such insults. His theory was very controversial and many disagreed with him. One of his opponents to the theory was Henry Lindlahr, author of "Philosophy of Natural Therapeutics", who believed that lowered vitality weakens the immune system to fighting disease. He concluded that the well-being of a man depends on normal nutrition and wholesome surroundings and that normal nutrition allowed for proper, drainage and enervation. Dr. Rodemon further demonstrated that Pasteur was wrong by smearing his body with small pox and going out in public. Nobody got small pox. Although dramatic, he had demonstrated a very important point.

Scientists began to classify the quality of protein in animals, which contained all necessary amino acids, vs. the quality of protein in plants, which contain bits and pieces of amino acids. They concluded that animal protein was of higher quality than plant protein, but did not bother to factor in which protein was healthier for human consumption or the fact that eating a wide variety of plant foods does provide all the necessary amino acids (The China Study, T.C. Campbell and T.M. Campbell).

After World War I (1914-1918), an allied blockade cut off the supply of food to over three million residents of Denmark, causing them to have to ration the food supply. One measures taken was to re-allocate grain used to feed livestock for the people. During this time, the death rate dropped by 34% (The CHina Study, T.C. Campbell and T.M. Campbell).

During World War II (1939-1945), the Norwegian government was forced to ration their food, especially meat, while the country was occupied by the Germans. Norway experienced a drastic drop in death from circulatory diseases during this time. Death rates rose again when the Germans left and Norway returned to their former diet. Britain and Switzerland also experienced an increase in health while food was rationed during World War II, where infant and post-natal death rates as well as the occurrence of anemia dropped to the lowest recorded at that time. What rose during this time? Growth rates and dental health for children. After World War II, the National Heart Institute investigated why plaque in heart disease develops and how it leads to heart attacks. A comparison of the medical records of 5,000 residents from Framingham, Massachusetts enabled the research team to develop risk factors such as cholesterol. blood pressure, physical activity, cigarette smoking and obesity. More than 1,000 scientific papers were produced from this study that showed a strong correlation between high blood cholesterol and heart disease (The China Study, T.C. Campbell and T.M. Campbell).

In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea and over 30,000 American soldiers were killed. Military medical investigators examined the hearts of 300 male soldiers and published their results in the Journal of the American Medical Association finding 77.3% of the hearts examined showed "gross" evidence of heart disease.

Many scientists have contributed to the development of true scientific understanding of nutrition in relation to disease since then. Dr. George Macilwain, a prominent surgeon of the 1800's and a vegetarian, has contributed fourteen books on medicine & health popularizing "the constitutional nature of disease." Dr. John McDougall, author of ten books on nutrition including "The McDougall Plan," also advocates a whole-foods, plant-based diet. Dr. Dean Ornish, Harvard graduate, is famous for his Lifestyle Heart Trial where he enforced stress management, meditation, three hours of exercise per week, breathing and relaxation exercises as well as cutting out almost all animal products from their diets. He found that 82% of his patients who adopted the lifestyle changes experienced a regression of their heart disease in one year.

Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., aka "Dr. Sprouts," was a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and at St. George's Hospital in London, president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and voted one of the best doctors in America in 1994-95. Dr. Sprouts began studying nutrition and found that diets rich in meat, fat and highly refined foods caused disease. He began experimenting with his patients putting them on a vegetarian and had the greatest success ever recorded on treating heart disease. Never before has their been such a compelling mountain of evidence recommending a whole-foods, plant-based diet. This stacked up against the equally important and pressing issue of the record deterioration of American health with correlation to the Standard American Diet.

Many of us are unaware of these studies because there is no agency or industry with the motivation to share them with. As a Biology major graduate and a nutritional educator, I am not interested in what is popular, but what is believed to be true by the standards of the most well-respected scientists in the field. Feeding the Hungry Hordes

I am a kind, giving person. The spirit of charity oozes through my very pores. If my charitable spirit were any oozier, I'd need a mop.

I hope you believe me, because I'm an honest person, too. Honesty runs through my veins, splints to my vital organs, and then jogs back to my heart. My kind of honesty is plaque deserving.

I'm telling you these things because I have an incredible tale to tell. I have suffered terrible injuries....the second hair on my left eyelash is still in a cast.....all, because I went on a charitable mission of mercy.

Me and mercy missions just don't mix.

Here is my sad, sad saga:

Last month, I was sitting at home watching the last three minutes of the news. I limit myself to only three news minutes a day, because of my kind, empathetic nature. If I listened to any more news, I'd be crying over all those tales of woe.

Now, don't start thinking I'm a dummy because I'm a news limiter. I do like to learn. There's a lot of information in those infomercials.

Anyway....I'm sitting there listening to the news, when an anguished young reporter starts talking about the hungry hordes over there in Atlanta. I live in Georgia, so I figure that I had nothing better to do that week-end, except get married, so I should go on over to Atlanta to help feed those poor, hungry people.

I went to the store, got a bunch of groceries, and came home to prepare them. Let me tell you folks....I busted my butt and my budget at Bilos. Remember, when I said I am charitable? Well, I'm not balony and bean charitable. Uh-huh...not me. I was going to give those folks a veritable feast.

Things got ugly before I even left for Atlanta.

See, the plan was that my sweetheart, Jim would drive me because I hate long distance driving. Well, while I was getting out my rolling papers to smoke the salmon, he started complaining.

Jim: I'm glad that you have such a charitable heart, my darling, gorgeous, Edie....but where's dinner?"

Me: "Sweetheart, it's hard to listen to you, while I'm trying to fit this stupid fish inside this tiny rolling paper. Whatever you're looking for, I'm sure it's lying around here somewhere. Have you checked your pants pocket?"

Jim:"My darling sexy Edie, I am asking you about my dinner. And, please, stop licking that paper. That is NOT the way to smoke salmon."

You need a pipe."

Me: (Cough, cough, cough, gasp, wheeee-ze) "God, I hope those starving people know what suffering I'm going through for them."

Jim: "I'm getting hungry. What if I got down on my hands and knees..?"

Me: "Don't do that. That's your sex beg, and I'm too busy choking on fish fumes right now."

Jim: "I guess I'll be forced to look in the refrigerator, myself."

Me, pointing at the refrigerator contents: "See....there's plenty. You've got a pickle, two tablespoons of mayonnaise, and a candy bar. Wait....I need that chocolate for my low blood sugar....but you still have that pickle and the mayonaise. Make yourself a yummy pickle tapa."

Jim: "My sophisticated, charming hot chick of a girlfiend, I'm begging you to feed me something....anything."

Me: "Look, do you know how hard it is to keep up with the Joneses"? Do you realize what our neighbor, Betty, did last month? She homed the homessless, shoed the shoeless, and clothed the clothesless. By the way, that strip joint down the street is closing because of her."

My point is that in order to compete with Little Miss Sunshine, I need to be sunnier, kinder, and givier. Look, you're not going to get any of this food. Sometimes, you have to be selfish to be altruistic."

Jim: "Please..."

Me: "No. Taking the time to feed you will interfere with my spiritual growth. I just can't WAIT to show up that neighbor of ours."

Jim: "Well, you're taking the bus, then. I'm going to be busy looking for something to eat. By the way, did you say that Betty is a foodless feeder?"

Me: "Fine, if my pickle's not good enough for you, then go to Betty! Let her satisfy that ravenous appetite of yours! We're through. I'm packing my basket and going to Atlanta!"

With tears in my eyes and a candy bar in my hand, I left the smoked salmon in the ashtray, and proceeded to pack up the champagne and caviar. I caught the first bus out to Atlanta.

Tears stream down my cheeks like little bitty twin rivers as I recall what happened that fateful day......to poor little me.

I remember being on that Greyhound bus to Atlanta, my head leaning back aginast the headrest, my eyelids closed.....desperately needing to go pee...knowing that I could not go pee....because I was on a %!& Greyhound bus.

Anyway, we finally get to Atlanta and I'm really happy because I finally get to do a good deed....and find a place to pee.

Well, I don't see any place that looks like it has a public bathroom and I don't see anybody that looks hungry, either. I bravely trudge on with that heavy basket of caviar and champagne in my hand. I must have walked about a mile, when it hit me. Perhaps, I'm in the wrong neighborhood.

By, this time, I'm practically crawling because my bladder is hurting. I'm crying, and I still have fish breath from smoking that salmon earlier. I was truly learning the lesson of giving til it hurts.

I stopped a passerby to ask where to go where they feed the hungry.

He looked at me and said, "You really look like you could use some help. I'm not sure where the nearest Salvation Army is, but you will need to get rid of those bottles of champagne before they will accept you. Oh, and here's a mint, fish-breath."

That's when it hit me. He thought I was poor and hungry. I tried to explain that I was merely broke and stinky, but he turned his back on me and refused to listen to my pleas for understanding and a bathroom.

I was so frustrated by that time that I hollered at the top of my lungs, "Where are the HUNGRY HORDES?"

Unfortunately.....a trucker started blowing his horn right in the middle of the word, hordes, and it completely drowned out the d sound. God, I hate it what that happens to me.

Anyway....

About that time, I see a group of about 50 highly pissed off women racing in my direction and screaming, "How dare you call us hungry whores....you highly attractive woman?"

And, about that time, my having to go to the bathroom problem got fixed. It was kind of like being relieved and ashamed and embarrassed at the same time....not unlike the emotions felt after one's first sexual experience.

Let's get back to the beating up I was about to get. Thankfully, I don't remember much. I do recall someone grabbing my basket, and screaming, "Hallelujah....caloric intake!!!!"

The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital with a detective standing there studying my beautiful face....except for all those cuts, scratches, deep gashes, and stitches on it.

I was determined to help the police solve the case. Even through my arm was throbbing from the intense pain, I reached over to the nightstand and picked up a box of Kleenex. I knew they'd need a tissue sample for the DNA evidence. Everyone in the room started applauding my heroic effort....but, in my morphine- induced haze it sounded almost like they were laughing.

The police worked doggedly and tirelessly on my case. I was questioned for what seemed to be hours about the horrible crime that was commited on my person. One question that seemed to be of particular interest to law enforcement was which liquor store I'd bought the champagne from. I raised myself up from my pillow, and with tremendous effort I whispered, "Bi-lo." I was determined to see the perpetrators of this heinous act brought to justice.

About this time, I sank into unconsciousness. When I awoke, there they were.....in my room....my attackers!!!!!

I shrank back in terror. I looked at my pillow. Were they planning on smothering me? I looked at my IV tubes. Perhaps, it was strangulation day at Grady Memorial. I looked at the financial forms on the table. That's it! They were going to bleed me to death. God, I hate paper cuts.

They started coming closer, their eyes gleaming. I shrank back further in my pillow....cause let's face it, I'm a scaredy-cat.

I summoned all my courage and glared at them. "This won't be like it was last time. I'm ready for you this time.

I have a catheter this time."

Well, they all started laughing, and told me not to be so dramatic. They started explaining things to me, and suddenly my horrible ordeal started to make sense.

The ladies were in Atlanta for a Weight-Watchers convention. They'd been celebrating their weight loss and had even taken a lesson in strip teasing to give them self-esteem about their bodies. Naturally, when that truck horn blew, and they couldn't hear the d in hordes....they thought I was referring to them.

And, remember those hungry people in Atlanta that the tv reporter was talking about? Well, she was referring to the folks at the Weight Watchers convention. God, I've never felt so stupid and embarrassed.

OK, yes, I have....zillions of times. I told you I was an honest person.

Anyway, the Weight Watchers ladies apologized. Did I mention that they were all drunk, too, from that champagne they stole from me? One of picked up the remote control and put MTV on. They all started dancing and one of them even started swinging from my IV pole.

We even ate lunch together. They still had some caviar, cheese, and crackers from my basket. I had fishsticks and jello.

Before they left, they handed me a bus ticket for home.

So, the lesson here is to think twice before you got to Atlanta to do some hungry horde feeding. Just stay home and eat a pickle instead.
