3 Day Chemical Breakdown Diet in a Nutshell

Today we'll being going over the 3 day chemical breakdown diet. This program has gained a lot of media attention in recent months and is touted as being a highly effective way to lose weight. This diet goes under a few different names and can vary, so you'll want to be careful when selecting books on the subject. Some of the other common names are the Birmingham hospital diet, the mayo clinic diet, British heart foundation 3 day diet, American heart association 3 day diet, Hershey medical center 3 day diet. Keep in mind that although they may be similar, they all can vary. Before starting any program like this you should speak with a Doctor.

Some of the versions explain that weight loss is occurred from the body breaking down various chemicals, but in reality it occurs because of the severe calorie restriction. Don't buy into a bunch of the marketing mumbo jumbo. Any kind of calorie restriction will work, it is scientific, but its def. not rocket science.


These all should give you boost when you begin a weight loss or healthy eating program. Keep in mind that most of them are considered to be fad diets. There may or may not be scientific evidence behind them. Again, each program will vary so consult with your physician first.

The 3 day chemical breakdown diet claims it can help you lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days. If this is true than its undoubtedly going to be water weight. Some versions tout losing up to 40 lbs in one month, I do not believe such claims. It might be a good jumpstart, but you probably won't get these kinds of results. The most common instructions involve restricting your calories to 1000 per day. This is a huge restriction and should be approached carefully. It should not be followed in the long term.

Is the 3 day diet safe? Is it healthy?

The short answer is both yes and no. It really depends on your overall health and whether you have any kind of health problems. Also, severe calorie restriction will mess up your metabolism, especially if it's long term. Do not attempt this for more than 3 days. It's important to realize that you will (more than likely) gain all of the weight you lost back (within days) if you go back to your normal eating pattern. Thus, this should ideally be used to jumpstart a long-term program.
