Managing Gout With Diet

Managing your diet is an effective way to naturally cure gout, but first, you must know which foods cause gout and start by avoiding eating these foods. Generally foods that are high in fats cause gout; likewise high level purines found in proteins, some beans and vegetables also cause gout. Meat and dairy products have proteins with large concentrations of purines.

Also to be avoided are fish products like mackerel, sardines, oysters, mussels, and scallops as well as poultry, pork and beef. The most important thing to avoid if you are suffering from gout is sweetmeats or offal like kidney, heart, or liver. Even products produced from meat such as broth, caviar and bouillon can produce high levels of uric acid.


Dairy products and vegetables are foods that can also cause gout, because they contain large amounts of purines. Some high-fat dairy products are whole milk, ice cream, butter, and cheese; replace these foods with low-fat dairy or soy products. Other foods that show signs of being rich in purines are spinach, mushrooms, cauliflower, peas, and asparagus. Lentil beans and yeast can raise the chance of inflammation. Even liquor beverages such as beer and alcohol are to be avoided since they are derived from yeast and grains, known to increase gout discomfort.

Ingestion of purines is not the only way to acquire an unusually high uric acid concentration, also known as hyperuricemia. Poorly functioning kidneys work in combination with foods that cause gout, while fully functional kidneys filter out uric acid. Drinking large amount of water and eating tofu, olive oil, and nuts may actually neutralize the destabilized kidneys and help them to eliminate uric acid from the bloodstream.

A diet that is rich in complex carbohydrates may ease the symptoms of gout and encourages you to eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains like bread and pasta. Doctors may combine these dietary guidelines with the suggestion to eat only fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, and vegetables that contains high and complex carbohydrates. In addition, foods that are low in protein should also be consumed. It is also recommended that at least 15 percent of daily calories come from soy, lean meats or poultry, and not more than 30 percent of calories come from fat with only 10 percent animal fats.

The following are recommended foods to eat for people who are suffering with gout, because they meet the dietary guideline.

o Deep red and blue berries

o Bananas

o Celery

o Leafy green vegetables

o Pineapple and foods rich in bromelain

o Vitamin C rich foods i.e. red cabbage, red bell peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges and potatoes.

o Fruit juices and purified water with an average of 8 glasses of water per day

o Low-fat dairy products,

o Complex carbohydrates like breads, cereals, pasta, rice

o Chocolate, cocoa,

o Coffee, tea and carbonated beverages

o Essential fatty acids from tuna and salmon

o Flaxseed, nuts and seeds

o Tofu, although made from soybeans, is an alternative to meat.
